The Shubman Gill-led Indian men’s cricket team has already won the first Test match by an innings and 140 runs. It was also their first points on the board in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-2027 edition.

The 2nd match will now provide an opportunity for Indian players to play free-flowing cricket, although under the guidance of head coach Gautam Gambhir, every match is a must-win game, especially when there are further WTC points up for grabs.

We will be at the Arun Jaitley Stadium for the 2nd Test match commencing on October 10. According to reports by ESPNcricinfo, the surface at the venue will be quite different compared to that of the Ahmedabad pitch in the 1st Test. Below is everything you need to know about the Arun Jaitley Stadium pitch report for the 2nd India vs West Indies Test match.

Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium Pitch Report – Batting or Bowling Pitch?

Stadium Name Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium
    Location New Delhi, India
    Opened On 1888
    Seating Capacity Around 35,200
Boundary Size (Straight) Around 57-73 meters

The Arun Jaitley Stadium is situated in the national capital in New Delhi. The ground was opened in the year 1888, about 142 years before 2025. It was formerly known as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium and has a capacity of 35,200.

As reported by various sources, the Arun Jaitley Stadium pitch report will be a black-soil pitch, drastically different from Ahmedabad’s red-soil surface.

The black-soil pitch surface means the pitch will be a batting-friendly surface. There will be only patches of grass, meaning there won’t be much seam movement available for the pace bowlers, which significantly reduces the new ball threat. Faster outfield combined with shorter boundaries will aid the batters to score with ease.

Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium Pitch Report – Fast Bowler or Spin Bowler Pitch?

The first Test match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad witnessed the fast bowlers running rampant. The duo of Indian pace bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah combined to dethrone the West Indies batting line-up in the 1st innings.

However, a black soil with patches of grass means that there barely will be much seam movement available for the fast bowlers. It will all be down to the ability of the bowlers themselves to trick the batters into making a mistake.

But it’s not completely going to be a game where bowlers are just mere spectators. The spin bowlers could have some impact on the game in the later days of the game, particularly on days 4 and 5. As the pitch starts to dry out, the lack of grass will result in cracks starting to appear, which the spin bowlers could really take advantage of.

In short, the Arun Jaitley Stadium pitch report suggests it will be significantly different than the Ahmedabad one. It will be a black-soil pitch with just patches of grass. That means batters will enjoy playing shots on this surface. The lack of movement, combined with a fast outfield and shorter boundaries, should ensure a big run-scoring match. Unless the fast bowler is someone of the calibre of Siraj or Bumrah, it could be a difficult game for the pacers. But spinners will enjoy bowling on days 4 and 5 when the cracks open up.
