Before the full-time appointment, Brook had an opportunity to lead England in ODIs. He stepped up in the absence of injured Buttler in a five-ODI series against Australia in September 2024.
Brook had a rough start to his captaincy stint. England lost the first two ODIs. But England bounced back with two back-to-back wins, only to lose the fifth match and the series.
It was in May 2025 when Brook officially took over the charge from Buttler in ODIs and T20Is.
