Dasun Shanaka may not have had an illustrious career for Sri Lanka, but he has been impactful with his all-round performance. He can strike hard lower down the order and can bowl with a medium pace.
While Shanaka’s performances with bat and ball have been decent, it’s his leadership trait that has worked wonders for Sri Lanka. He has captained the Lankan Lions in ODIs and T20Is, with many stints in domestic T20 leagues.

It was back in 2019 when Shanaka first led Sri Lanka in international cricket. He was the stand-in skipper in the three-match T20I series in Pakistan, which the Lankans won by 3-0.
Shanaka had an impressive start to his captaincy run. But it was only in 2021 when he became Sri Lanka’s full-time captain in ODIs and T20Is.
The full-time run lasted for about two years, with mixed returns. He, however, had some notable victories to show, from the 2022 Asia Cup win to the unbeaten run in the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier.
Shanaka is now back in the leadership group. He has been stepping up in the absence of the regular skipper in limited-overs cricket.

Shanaka had a decent stint as Sri Lanka’s ODI skipper. He led them in 41 matches, with 23 victories.
Under Shanaka’s guidance, Sri Lanka dominated at home. They won bilateral series against Australia, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Afghanistan. The Lankans also qualified for the 2023 World Cup, while they entered the final of the 2023 Asia Cup.
Shanaka’s captaincy run, though, came to an abrupt halt when he got injured in the 2023 World Cup. Following that, he never captained Sri Lanka in ODIs.

The highlight of Shanaka’s reign has been the 2022 Asia Cup victory. Sri Lanka started on a bad note, losing their first match against Afghanistan. But they staged an immediate comeback and went on to win the T20 Asia Cup.
The other notable moments have been the bilateral series wins against Pakistan and India in the initial years of his captaincy.

Shanak led the Aura to the semi-final in the 2020 Lanka Premier League. The next year, he guided SLC Greys to the title triumph in the SLC Invitational T20 League.
