The left-hand batter has infused a new energy into the Lankan Lions. And the results are evident to see.

Charith Asalanka made his captaincy in an interim capacity in March 2024. He filled in for Wanindu Hasaranga in a couple of T20Is against Bangladesh.
But it wasn’t long before Asalanka received the permanent T20I charge in July 2024. And within days, he got the reins of the ODI squad as well.
Since then, Asalanka has led Sri Lanka in 44 matches, with 24 wins across white-ball games.

Asalanka hasn’t yet captained Sri Lanka in Test cricket, nor is he a regular in the red-ball setup.

The first major assignment for Asalanka was the series against India. And he didn’t disappoint at all. He led the Lankan Lions to a historic series victory against India.
Since then, Sri Lanka have been almost invincible at home in bilateral ODIs. They haven’t lost an ODI series at home under Asalanka’s leadership.
And the usual losses have reduced to some extent. Sri Lanka have lost a mere four of the 19 ODIs captained by Asalanka. His win percentage is the best by a Sri Lankan captain in ODIs in the 21st century.

In T20Is, though, Asalanka has struggled thus far. Sri Lanka have lost three bilateral series under his permanent stint till now.
He has led the team in 25 T20Is, returning with 11 victories and 14 losses. While Asalanka has the right ingredients, he needs to take a leaf out of his ODI stint to succeed in the shortest format.

Asalanka has had great outings in Sri Lanka’s domestic T20 circuit. The most significant outing for him came in the 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL). Now he is leading Sri Lanka Team in Asia Cup 2025.
Asalanka guided Jaffna Kings to their third LPL title, beating Galle Marvels in the summit clash. In his maiden captaincy stint in the LPL, he won seven matches out of the 11.
