McGrath led Australia for the first time in December 2022. She helped Australia complete a T20I series win over India, stepping up in the last match of the series.

McGrath has served as Australia’s stand-in skipper in ODIs. And her record has been superb thus far.
On her captaincy debut, she guided Australia to seal a three-match series against Ireland by 2-0. Australia whitewashed India in a three-match series at home in late 2024.
McGrath stepped up in Alyssa Healy’s absence in two matches in the 2025 World Cup, playing a crucial role in Australia qualifying for the semi-final.

McGrath’s first captaincy experience came with Australia A. She has led the ‘A’ team in two T20 series, both against India A. And on both occasions, she guided her side to clean sweeps against the visitors, first in 2019 and then in 2024.
McGrath’s major captaincy stint has come in the WBBL. She has been at the helm of Adelaide Strikers since 2021 in the league.
Ever since she has taken over the role, the Strikers have made the knockouts in three seasons. And they even lifted the WBBL trophy twice in back-to-back editions in 2022 and 2023.
