Markram had captaincy experience at the youth level. He captained South Africa’s under-19 team to the World Cup victory in 2014.
So Markram was a natural choice to lead South Africa at the senior level. And the opportunity arrived in 2018. He filled in for Faf du Plessis in the six-match ODI series against India.
Markram’s name was already known in leadership discussions earlier (from 2018), but he officially became South Africa’s full-time T20I captain in early 2023. He replaced Temba Bavuma as South Africa’s T20I skipper. And he has stepped up in the absence of Bavuma in ODIs and Tests thus far.

Markram was yet to establish himself in South Africa’s ODI setup back in 2018. That’s when the opportunity to captain the Proteas knocked on his door.
While Markram didn’t have a great start, he showed the potential to lead the Proteas. Fast forward to now, and he has led them across formats.
Markram has captained the Proteas men in 49 international matches. He has had a mixed outing thus far, with 24 wins and 25 losses.

Markram has been at the forefront of the T20I team since 2023. The calm, composed leader is still trying to find the rhythm.
But the highlight of his captaincy has been the Proteas’ run to the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup. Markram almost led them to the elusive title but fell short in the final.
Except for the dominating performance in the T20 World Cup, Markram’s captaincy hasn’t been smooth. He has guided the Proteas to 14 wins out of 31 matches.

Markram is still a makeshift captain in ODIs. He mostly fills in for Bavuma.
But his track record is no different from T20Is. He has struggled in his interim capacity, especially against strong teams.
While he seems to be the future captain, there’s a lot to learn and adapt. Nevertheless, Markram has fetched seven wins out of 15 ODIs.

Markram’s foray into Test captaincy is relatively new. He led the South African Test outfit for the first time in 2024.
And in his very first attempt, Markram returned with a Test series win. He led the Proteas to a 2-0 win in Bangladesh to start his Test captaincy tenure on a perfect note.

Markram has also captained in domestic T20 tournaments. And the most notable outings have come in the IPL and SA20.
It was his excellent SA20 2023 stint that earned him a captaincy job in the IPL. Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) first appointed Markram as their skipper in the inaugural SA20. After he led SEC to the title, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) roped him in as the captain in the IPL.
Markram struggled to replicate his SA20 success in the IPL, where SRH finished near the bottom. Hyderabad finished at the bottom with just four wins.

Nevertheless, Markram guided SEC to another SA20 victory in 2024. And currently, he is the most successful captain in SA20 history.
