When Virat Kohli left India’s captaincy in 2021, Rohit Sharma was the natural successor. Why?
Sharma had extensive captaincy experience in the IPL, with five trophies to show. And he had led India on numerous occasions before.
So selectors had an easy job to bring Sharma aboard as the captain. And thus far, he has led the team well, especially in white-ball cricket.
This article will provide an overview of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy record in all formats.
Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record in All Formats
Matches | Won | Lost | Tied | Drawn | No Result | Win% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
142 | 104 | 33 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 73.23 |
The first time Sharma led India was back in 2017. He filled in for Kohli in a limited-overs series against Sri Lanka at home.
Sharma stumbled in his first match as a captain. But he bounced back soon to win his first ODI and T20I series.
Since then, the Mumbai batter has led India in 142 matches across formats. And he has returned with 104 victories.
Sharma’s win percentage of 73.23 is the highest among Indian captains who have led the team in at least 50 matches. He is also the fourth Indian skipper to win 100-plus matches across formats.

1. Rohit Sharma Captaincy Record in Test Cricket
Matches | Won | Lost | Drawn | No Result | Win% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
24 | 12 | 9 | 3 | 0 | 50.00 |
While Sharma’s overall captaincy record is superb, he has taken some hits in Test cricket. In a short span, he had to oversee a transition in the Test team.
Perhaps not having a solid base and a defensive captaincy brought some negative results. Sharma captained in whites in 24 matches. And took the team over the ropes in 12 matches.
This gave him a win percentage of 50, which isn’t bad at all. But what hurt the most was the series whitewash against New Zealand at home, followed by an unsuccessful defence of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
These two failures perhaps prompted him to step away from the Test format. He announced his retirement from Tests in May 2025.

Matches | Won | Lost | Tied | No Result | Win% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
56 | 42 | 12 | 1 | 1 | 75.00 |
Sharma’s Test captaincy was a see-saw ride. But that hasn’t been the case with the ODI stint.
India dominated ODI cricket like a boss under Sharma’s captaincy. And his win percentage confirms it.
Sharma has the highest win percentage among Indian captains in ODIs. He has captained the team in 56 ODIs, with 42 victories.
India have won several bilaterals and even multi-nation tournaments under Sharma’s tutelage. The most notable being the 2025 Champions Trophy victory and two Asia Cup titles in 2018 and 2023.
The Indian team also made it to the 2023 World Cup final. But they fell short of lifting the trophy.

Sharma’s captaincy record is even superior in T20I cricket. His IPL captaincy stint played a major role here.
He guided India to 50 wins out of 62 matches as captain. His win percentage of 80.64 is simply the best. In fact, Sharma is the most successful T20I skipper for India.
And he left the T20I captaincy on a high. Sharma took India to the T20 World Cup victory in 2024.

Matches | Won | Lost | Tied | No Result | Win% |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
158 | 89 | 69 | 0 | 0 | 56.32 |
This is where it all started for Sharma at the bigger stage. He was given the captaincy charge of Mumbai Indians (MI) mid-season in 2013. And with little expectations, he returned with their maiden IPL trophy.
Then followed a golden period for MI. In the next seven seasons, they lifted the trophy four more times under his leadership.
Before the captaincy snub in 2024, Sharma was at the helm for 158 matches. And won 89 of them to have a win percentage of 56.32.
