Afghanistan’s rise has been impressive in international cricket. Since the last decade or so, they have punched above their weight on many occasions.
And some of that credit goes to their captain – Hashmatullah Shahidi. He has been at the centre of Afghanistan’s success, especially in ODI cricket. His stint has been remarkable and filled with some notable wins.

In 2021, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) handed the Test and ODI captaincy to Hashmatullah Shahidi. He replaced Asghar Afghan in the job.
The ODI captaincy debut came in early 2022, while the Test captaincy debut happened a year later.
Since his appointment, Afghanistan have enjoyed a stellar run, especially in ODIs. Shahidi has been instrumental in the Afghan Atalans’ scripting some historic ODI victories. And that’s pretty much visible in his captaincy record.

Shahidi’s Test captaincy debut wasn’t memorable at all. Afghanistan conceded a defeat by 546 runs against Bangladesh in the one-off Test in June 2023. This is the third-largest Test defeat conceded by a team!
That was followed by two more losses, making Shahidi the first Afghan captain to lose three Tests in a row.
In early 2025, he led them to a 1-0 series victory against Zimbabwe while leading from the front with the bat. That also marked his first Test match win as Afghan skipper.

Shahidi has had a decent run as Afghanistan’s ODI captain. Since taking over the role in 2022, he has led them to many memorable wins, especially in ICC events.
Under Shahidi’s captaincy, Afghanistan defeated teams like England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Even in the 2025 Champions Trophy, the Afghan Atalans beat England.
He has also guided them to bilateral series wins against Bangladesh, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Ireland.
All in all, Shahidi’s leadership has worked wonders for Afghanistan in 50-over cricket.

While Hashmatullah hasn’t captained Afghanistan in T20Is yet, he has had successful stints in domestic T20 tournaments.
The first of his outings came with Boost Defenders in the 2022 Shpageeza Cricket League, where he led them to the final. From 2024 onwards, Shahidi has been at the helm of Band-e-Amir Dragons, guiding them to the runner-up finish in the 2024 edition.
In between, Shahidi captained Band-e-Amir Region to the Qosh Tepa National T20 Cup victory in 2024.
