Athapaththu has been an inspirational leader for Sri Lanka, guiding them to some memorable achievements in international cricket.

She won a single game during her interim stint between 2014 and 2016. And the picture hasn’t improved a lot since taking over full-time in 2018.
Except for series wins against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and the West Indies, Athapaththu has struggled to bring success.

Sri Lanka have tasted significant success under Athapaththu’s captaincy. She was instrumental in Sri Lanka qualifying for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup.
In between, Athapaththu led Sri Lanka to bilateral series wins against England and South Africa, their first in T20Is. She even guided them to the silver medal finish in the 2023 Asian Games. Then the Asia Cup triumph followed in 2024, beating heavyweight India in the final.
All in all, Athapaththu has been able to deliver big in the shortest format on all fronts.
