The IPL 2026 season will begin differently this year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided not to organize the traditional opening ceremony. The decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims of the stampede that happened in Bengaluru last year.
The tragic incident took place during celebrations after Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their first IPL title at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Eleven people lost their lives in that accident. Because of this, the board has decided to avoid any major celebration at the start of the new season.
IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony Cancelled
The IPL opening ceremony has always been one of the biggest entertainment events in the tournament. It usually includes music performances, dance shows, and appearances from celebrities.
However, for IPL 2026, the BCCI has confirmed that there will be no opening ceremony.
Last season’s opening event took place at Eden Gardens and included performances by several famous personalities.
| Previous IPL Opening Ceremony Highlights | Details |
|---|---|
| Venue | Eden Gardens |
| Performers | Shah Rukh Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, Disha Patani |
| Event type | Music and entertainment show |
In contrast, the 2026 season will begin without any cultural or entertainment program.
Why BCCI Made This Decision
The board said the decision was taken to pay respect to the victims of the Bengaluru stampede that happened on June 4, 2025.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that the board does not want to hold a celebration at the start of the season because of the tragic incident.
The goal is to acknowledge the loss of lives and show solidarity with the affected families.
Closing Ceremony Planned Instead
Although the opening ceremony has been cancelled, the IPL will still conclude with a large closing ceremony.
The IPL Governing Council is planning a major entertainment event on the final day of the tournament.
| Event | Details |
|---|---|
| Closing ceremony date | May 31 |
| Event purpose | Celebrate the end of IPL 2026 |
| Type of event | Entertainment show and trophy presentation |
This closing event is expected to be a big celebration for fans and players after the tournament finishes.

RCB to Host Matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium
Royal Challengers Bengaluru will once again play their home matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium this season.
After the stampede incident last year, the Karnataka State Cricket Association worked on improvements and safety arrangements at the stadium.
The venue will host several matches during the season.
RCB Home Matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium
| Match | Opponent | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Home Match 1 | Sunrisers Hyderabad | March 28 |
| Home Match 2 | Chennai Super Kings | April 5 |
The stadium is scheduled to host five RCB home matches during the league stage. In addition, one playoff match and the IPL 2026 final are also planned to be played in Bengaluru.
The cancellation of the opening ceremony shows how seriously the BCCI is treating the tragedy that happened last year.
While fans will miss the usual opening celebrations, the focus will now shift directly to cricket when the tournament begins.
For RCB supporters, the return of matches to the Chinnaswamy Stadium will still be a major moment as the team plays in front of their home crowd again.
With strong teams, new strategies, and passionate fans, IPL 2026 is still expected to deliver plenty of excitement on the field.
