South African star batter David Miller could be nearing the end of his international cricket career after being left out of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) central contract list for the 2026–27 season.
Miller has been one of the key players in South Africa’s white-ball teams for more than a decade. Last season, he was given a hybrid contract that allowed him to play selected international matches while also participating in franchise leagues around the world.
However, for the 2026–27 season, CSA did not offer him either a central contract or a hybrid contract. This decision has led to strong speculation that Miller may soon retire from international cricket.
CSA Contract Changes for 2026–27
CSA has introduced several changes to its contract system for the upcoming season. New players have been rewarded with their first central contracts, while some experienced players have been left out.
Young talents such as Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, and Karabo Meso received their first CSA contracts.
Off-spinner Simon Harmer was given a hybrid contract, which sits between a full central deal and being outside the contract list.
Fast bowler Anrich Nortje was also not included in the central contracts. Nortje had earlier stepped away from the annual contract structure to focus more on T20 cricket after injury setbacks.
Meanwhile, senior players including Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, and Kwena Maphaka secured central contracts.
Overall, CSA awarded 18 full central contracts and also introduced a wider pool of players known as “Players of National Interest” for future national team selection.

David Miller’s IPL 2026 Plans
While his international future remains uncertain, David Miller is preparing for the upcoming IPL season.
He is set to play for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026. Delhi Capitals will begin their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants in the opening match in Lucknow on April 1.
If Miller does not receive a CSA contract in the future, he may focus more on global T20 leagues such as the IPL and other franchise tournaments.

South Africa’s Busy Cricket Schedule Ahead
CSA’s new contract structure comes as South Africa prepares for a packed international calendar.
The team will play several major series over the next year, including matches in the ICC World Test Championship.
Major Upcoming Assignments
| Series | Format |
|---|---|
| Australia vs South Africa | Test series |
| England vs South Africa | Test series |
| Bangladesh vs South Africa | Test series |
| Sri Lanka tour | ODI preparation for 2027 World Cup |
These series will play an important role in South Africa’s preparation for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
David Miller’s absence from the central contract list signals a shift in South Africa’s squad planning. CSA appears to be focusing more on multi-format players and younger talent for the future.
At the same time, experienced players are being managed differently as the board balances international commitments with franchise cricket opportunities.
If Miller steps away from international cricket, it will mark the end of a long and impactful career with the Proteas.
