Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in a high-scoring IPL 2026 match at the Wankhede Stadium. Virat Kohli played an important role in the victory with a half-century, helping RCB post a strong total.
After the match, former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about Kohli’s innings and the ongoing discussion about strike rate in T20 cricket. Ashwin said that the debate should not always be about right or wrong, because every match situation is different.
Ashwin’s View on Kohli’s Strike Rate
Ravichandran Ashwin shared his thoughts about Kohli’s batting approach during the match. According to him, there are times in T20 cricket when even top batters find it difficult to increase the scoring rate.
He explained that Kohli was not able to accelerate during parts of the innings, but that does not mean the innings was poor. Ashwin said such situations are common in cricket.
He also suggested that if a power hitter had come earlier in the innings, players like Tim David or Romario Shepherd could have helped RCB push the score even higher. His point was that team strategy and timing of batting changes can influence the final total.
Virat Kohli Reaches Major Milestone
Despite the debate about strike rate, Kohli achieved an important record during the match.
He became the first player in T20 cricket to score more than 1000 runs against Mumbai Indians. With this achievement, he moved ahead of players like KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan in the head-to-head record against MI.
Kohli started the innings quickly, scoring 20 runs from his first 11 balls. He eventually finished with 50 runs from 38 balls, hitting five fours and one six.
However, during the innings he suffered an ankle problem and did not take the field later when Mumbai Indians were chasing the target.
Kohli has also scored more than 1000 runs against several other teams during his IPL career with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
