Smriti Mandhana is simply one of the best batters going around in women’s cricket. She has piled up runs for India across formats.
But Mandhana hasn’t kept herself limited to just scoring runs or the big knocks. She has also taken on leadership duties.
Mandhana showed her leadership abilities quite early in her professional career. The left-hand batter first captained her state team, Maharashtra, at the age of 16.
Having captained at such a young age meant Mandhana remained in contention to lead India. And she has led the Women in Blue on several counts, although in a stand-in capacity.
She has also had fruitful stints in women’s T20 tournaments and even led Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to the WPL trophy triumph.
On that note, let’s look at Smriti Mandhana’s captaincy record in women’s cricket.

Mandhana made her international captaincy debut for India in 2019. She led the team in a T20I series against England, which India lost 3-0.
While Mandhana didn’t have a great start to her captaincy, she has been part of the leadership group since then. She has filled in for Harmanpreet Kaur on many occasions in ODIs and T20Is.
Mandhana’s captaincy record so far looks promising. That puts her among the favourites to lead India in the future.

Mandhana has had decent experience leading teams in domestic T20 tournaments.
She captained the Trailblazers in the Women’s T20 Challenge in three seasons. Under her leadership, the Trailblazers won the competition in 2020. Overall, Mandhana led them in seven matches, with four wins.
When the WPL started in 2023, RCB appointed Mandhana as their first captain. The team, however, had a tough time in the inaugural season, with just two wins in eight matches.
In the next season, RCB bounced back. Mandhana led them to their first WPL trophy, beating Delhi Capitals in the final. That made her the first RCB captain to win any major T20 league (men’s or women’s).
Mandhana, however, failed to defend the title in the 2025 season. RCB had a good start but lost steam in the middle and couldn’t make the knockouts.
