Tom Latham has been around New Zealand’s setup for more than a decade now. He isn’t the loudest on the field. But he knows how to create impact with the bat, especially in Tests and ODIs.
But Latham’s impact isn’t limited to his batting. He has been a reliable leader for the Kiwis across formats. He led them mostly in a stand-in capacity, though he is now their full-time Test captain.
Here you can look at Tom Latham’s captaincy record in international cricket.
Tom Latham Captaincy Record in All Formats
| Format | Matches | Won | Lost | Tied | Drawn | No Result | Win% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | 16 | 8 | 7 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 53.33 |
| ODI | 44 | 28 | 15 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 63.64 |

| Total | 72 | 42 | 28 | 0 | 0 | 2 | 58.33 |
Latham first captained New Zealand back in 2017. He led them in an ODI tri-series in Ireland, which New Zealand won.
Following that, Latham continued to lead the Blackcaps across formats, although in a stand-in capacity. He mostly filled in in the absence of regular skippers. It was only in October 2024 that Latham became New Zealand’s permanent Test skipper.
Despite being a stand-in skipper for most of his stint, Latham is already New Zealand’s fourth most successful captain in international cricket. His win percentage is also the second-highest by a New Zealand captain in international cricket.
Tom Latham Captaincy Record in Test Cricket

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | 8 | 7 | 0 | 1 | 53.33 |
Latham has been New Zealand’s full-time Test skipper since October 2024. And in his very first series, he scripted history. Latham guided the Kiwis to a 3-0 series whitewash over India, and that too on Indian soil.
Although Latham had led New Zealand before, this is easily the top highlight of his short captaincy stint.
During his stand-in stint, he helped the Kiwis complete a series win against the West Indies in late 2020. He followed that up with a 1-0 series win in England in 2021. Then, in early 2022, New Zealand drew 1-1 with Bangladesh and South Africa.
Tom Latham Captaincy Record in ODI Cricket

While Latham led New Zealand in a significant number of ODIs, he never captained them in a permanent capacity. So he led them in 44 ODIs in a temporary capacity.
Latham had a good record in those matches. He won 28 of those ODIs to have a win percentage of 63.64, which is the second highest by a New Zealand captain who has led in at least 20 ODIs.
The highlight of his ODI captaincy run was the bilateral series victories against Bangladesh, Ireland, India, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka.
Latham also captained New Zealand in the 2023 ODI World Cup in the absence of Kane Williamson, with three wins and three losses.
Tom Latham Captaincy Record in T20I Cricket

Latham led New Zealand for a brief time in T20Is. His captaincy wasn’t that effective in the shortest format.
New Zealand lost a five-match series in Bangladesh by 2-3 in 2021. However, he guided them to a 2-1 series win against Sri Lanka and drew 2-2 against Pakistan in 2023.

Latham had brief captaincy stints in New Zealand’s HRV Cup (now Super Smash) and England’s T20 Blast.
His outing with Canterbury in the HRV Cup wasn’t fruitful. He led them in seven of the 10 matches in the 2012/13 season and managed three wins.
