Sophie Devine is among those few women’s cricketers who can change the tide of the game with the bat as well as the ball.
Such players are no less than an asset. And Devine is no exception either.
The New Zealand all-rounder can strike the ball hard and outsmart batters with her medium pace. Devine brings this combination of power and smartness to her captaincy.
She has been leading New Zealand for more than half a decade at the international level, with notable success to her name.
In this article, we’ll look at Sophie Devine’s captaincy record in women’s international cricket.

Devine made her captaincy debut against the West Indies in 2014, although the T20I game lasted for two overs. Then she had another interim stint on the 2015 India tour, guiding the White Ferns to a T20I series win.
Five years later, Devine was back as an interim skipper. But by July 2020, she became the permanent captain across ODIs and T20Is.
Since then, Devine has seen the highs and lows of the White Ferns in limited-overs cricket. The highlight of her captaincy stint has been the T20 World Cup victory in 2024.
Thus far, Devine has led New Zealand in over 100 international matches with considerable success to her name.

Devine has struggled to keep up the momentum in ODIs. And her captaincy record pretty much sums that up.
Devine had the worst possible start to her ODI captaincy stint, with four series losses on the trot. Then, a group stage exit followed in the home World Cup in 2022.
The unstable run continues, with just a couple of series wins since then. Under Devine’s leadership, the White Ferns have won around 35 per cent of ODI matches.

Devine’s T20I captaincy is much better than her ODI one. And New Zealand’s successful run to the title in the 2024 T20 World Cup stands as a testimony.
Devine guided the White Ferns to their first-ever T20 World Cup triumph, beating South Africa in the final. She pulled that off despite New Zealand not being the favourites!
While her stint has had a fair share of highs and lows, the T20 World Cup triumph brushes everything off.
