Gill’s T20I captaincy debut came almost a year before his Test captaincy foray. It was on the Zimbabwe tour in July 2024 that he led a young squad.
The team lacked several big stars who featured in the T20 World Cup before the series. Like his maiden Test outing, India suffered a loss in Gill’s first match as T20I skipper.
But the next day, Gill led India to a 100-run win, marking his first victory as T20I captain. Then India won the next three matches to bag the series, the first for Gill in the format.
