    R. Premadasa Stadium Pitch Report

The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 will be graced across five different venues in India and Sri Lanka. The R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo meanwhile is the only representative venue from the Island nation.

The first match of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 at the R. Premadasa Stadium will be played between the Bangladesh Women’s team and the Pakistan Women’s cricket team on October 2, Thursday from 3 P.M Indian Standard Time (IST).

Interestingly, the Bangladesh and Pakistan women’s teams were the bottom two placed teams in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2022 with one win and six losses respectively. Now there is pressure on Bangladesh women’s captain Nigar Sultana and Pakistan women’s team captain Fatima Sana to lead their side to semi-finals this term.

Other than the Bangladesh vs Pakistan match, the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo will also host a total 10 more matches at the venue, most among all five venues.

The venue will host most of the Sri Lanka women’s team matches as well as all of the Pakistan women’s team games after an agreement between BCCI, PCB and ICC that Pakistan will not play any games in India. It must also be noted that in case Pakistan qualify for the semi-finals and even the final match, then those games are also likely to be played at R. Premadasa Stadium. With so many games lined-up, let’s check out the R. Premadasa Stadium pitch report.

    R. Premadasa Stadium Pitch Report – Batting or Bowling Pitch?

    Stadium Name R. Premadasa Stadium
    Location Colombo, Sri Lanka
    Established On 1986
    Seating Capacity 35,000
Boundary Size (Straight) Around 71-80 meters

The R. Premadasa Stadium, formerly known as Khettarama Stadium, is situated on the Khettarama road on the suburbs of Colombo, the largest city in the Island nation Sri Lanka. It is the largest stadium in Sri Lanka with a capacity of 35,000. It was established in the year 1986 under Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The first match played here was an ODI match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in 1986.

During the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, the R. Premadasa Stadium is set to offer a batting surface according to pitch reports. The Premadasa Stadium is known to favour the batters who enjoy playing shots when the ball comes nicely because of even bounce and pace available, with the new ball particularly. The fast outfield also aids in scoring.

    R. Premadasa Stadium Pitch Report – Spinners or Fast Bowlers Pitch?

As for the bowling, much like the other venues to feature in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, it is likely to favour the spin bowlers more than the fast bowlers. The pacers will have to take advantage of the new ball. There might be some movement with the new ball for the pacers but they will have to stick to line and length.

However, it is the spin bowlers who can be the game-changers. The R. Premadasa Stadium pitch report suggests that the surface is likely to get slower during the middle overs when the new ball loses its shine, giving the spinners a chance to take command of the game. However, under the lights, there remains the danger of dew that could neutralize the effect of spin bowling.
