And the result? Since Cummins appointment, Australia have retained the Ashes twice, won a series in Pakistan, and lifted the WTC title under his captaincy and defeated South Africa at home for the first time since 2008, and reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Bilateral success aside, Australia even won the World Test Championship (WTC) under his guidance. That’s a solid portfolio to have as a captain.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were on the lookout for a clever leader after their lacklustre 2023 campaign — and their search ended with Pat Cummins.
In the IPL 2024 auction, SRH spent INR 20.5 crore to sign the Australian pacer, making him the most expensive player of the season. He was immediately appointed captain, and the decision paid off as SRH reached the final, although they lost to KKR.
While Cummins hasn’t captained Australia in T20Is, he made his mark in the T20 format through the IPL. In IPL 2025, expectations were high, but SRH couldn’t replicate their previous success and crashed out in the league stage.
