Varun Chakaravarthy was born in the state of Karnataka. He is a spin bowler and a right-handed batsman. Primarily Varun is a leg break Googly bowler. He plays domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu and represents Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.
Varun Chakaravarthy’s cricket career began in 2015 as a medium fast bowler from Crombest Cricket Club. However, Due to injury during bowling, he had to stay away from cricket for 1 year. After relentless struggle, he returned as a spin bowler. He started playing for Jubilee Cricket Club in the fourth division. Later, he was nominated for Tamil Nadu’s Karaikudi Kaalai team but did not get a chance to play.
In 2018, he got a chance to play for the Siechem Madurai Panthers team in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.
He played a total of 10 matches and showed excellent bowling. In that season, he made a significant impact, taking 9 wickets in 240 balls with the help of 125 dot balls with spin bowling. Due to his excellent performance, he was nominated for the senior team of Tamil Nadu.
In 2018, Varun Chakaravarthy played for Tamil Nadu in List A cricket for the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his debut against Gujarat. During the debut match, he impressed by taking 1 wicket for 41 runs in about 10 overs. He also scored 18 runs in this match. In a total of 9 matches in his debut season, he took 22 wickets and scored 65.

He made his IPL debut in 2019 with Kings XI Punjab (KXIP). In 2019, he was auctioned for Rs 8.4 crore. In 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders acquired him for Rs 4 crore. He made significant contributions for KKR in 2020 and 2021. He was associated with Kolkata Knight Riders from 2022 to 2024 at a price of 8 crores. In 2024, Varun Chakaravarthy played an important role for Kolkata Knight Riders. Chakaravarthy was the second highest wicket-taker with 21 wickets. Seeing his great achievement, Kolkata Knight Riders decided to retain him in 2025 by spending Rs 12 crore on him.

Varun Chakaravarthy made his IPL debut in 2019 but did not perform well. He played his first match for Kings 11 Punjab against Kolkata Knight Riders. Due to his poor performance, he failed to make an impact and he was released ahead of the 2020 session.
In IPL season 2020 Varun Chakaravarthy showcased his brilliant bowling, taking 17 wickets in 13 matches. He conceded 356 runs in 53 overs.

Varun Chakaravarthy made his international cricket debut in a T20 match against Sri Lanka. In his debut series, he took 2 wickets for 61 runs in 11.3 overs across three matches.
In February 2025, during the first match of the 5-match T20 series against England, Varun Chakaravarthy delivered an impressive performance, taking 3 wickets for 23 runs in 4 overs. With this, he won the Player Of The Match award.
