Pandya led India in T20Is in the absence of Rohit Sharma after the 2022 T20 World Cup. And he seemed to be the front-runner to become a permanent captain.
But being an injury-prone player ruled him out of the race, with Suryakumar Yadav instead handed the reins after the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Nevertheless, Pandya had a productive run as India’s skipper in the brief period at the helm. He led them in 16 matches, with 10 wins under his belt. India also won four bilateral series under his guidance.

Before captaining India, Pandya showed his captaincy skills in the IPL. GT appointed him as their captain in their debut IPL season in 2022.
And that move worked wonders, as the all-rounder led them straight to the IPL trophy. The next season, Pandya guided GT to another final, although they fell short in defending their title.
It seemed Pandya would continue his stay with GT for another few seasons. But in a major coup, MI traded in Pandya for his sheer leadership skills.
And on his return, Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as MI’s skipper in IPL 2024. But the move didn’t work well, as MI finished at the bottom of the table. In IPL 2025, though, Pandya guided Mumbai into the knockouts.
