Axar Patel has been a mainstay for India in limited-overs cricket. He has been valuable with his left-arm spin and more than handy with his performances with the bat.
Patel has even shown his all-round brilliance in domestic cricket while playing for Gujarat and a couple of franchises in the IPL.
But what makes him a complete player are his leadership skills. Patel has decent experience captaining teams in domestic cricket. And he has also served as the vice-captain of India’s T20I squad.
Here you can look at Axar Patel’s captaincy record in IPL and T20 cricket.

Patel has led his home state, Gujarat, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). He has tasted considerable success in SMAT, with his best captaincy outing coming in the 2024 season.
Gujarat won six matches in a row after a defeat in their first group stage match to almost qualify for the knockouts.
This incredible run in the SMAT 2024 saw him take over the captaincy duties at Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2025 season. While Patel had led DC once in 2024, 2025 marked his first full-time stint in the league.
The all-rounder had a great start to his stint, winning six of the first eight matches. But Patel lost the plot in the second half to finish in the fifth spot.
Overall, Patel has had a decent run as a skipper in domestic T20 and IPL cricket.
