Ajinkya Rahane has been a dependable batter in the Indian cricket circuit. That led to him playing for India across formats and even in the ICC tournaments.

Ajinkya Rahane led India for a brief period, although in an interim capacity. He first captained India in ODIs and T20Is on the 2015 Zimbabwe tour.
Rahane filled in for MS Dhoni, taking India to a 3-0 sweep in ODIs and returning with a 1-1 draw in T20Is.
A couple of years later, he stood in for Virat Kohli in a Test against Australia, guiding India to seal a 2-1 series victory on home soil.
Overall, Rahane captained India in 11 matches across formats, with eight wins and a solitary loss to his name.

Rahane’s Test captaincy debut came in the fourth Test against Australia in 2017. He led India in the absence of Kohli with the series on the line. His tactical brilliance handed India a 2-1 series win against the Aussies.
More than a year later, Rahane captained India in a one-off Test against Afghanistan, which he won by an innings and 262 runs.
But Rahane’s moment of glory came in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). India were 0-1 and without Kohli heading into the second Test in Melbourne. But Rahane’s calm and composed leadership staged a massive turnaround as India claimed the BGT 2-1.
In all, he led India in six Tests, winning four of them and drawing two to have a win percentage of 66.67.

Rahane has had significant captaincy experience in domestic T20 cricket, including the IPL. And he has tasted considerable success as well.
Rahane has lifted the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, leading Mumbai to the triumph over Himachal Pradesh in the 2022 season final. The next season, he guided Mumbai to the quarter-finals, falling short of defending the title.
In the IPL, Rahane has captained three teams. His IPL captaincy debut came for Rising Pune Supergiant when he filled in for Steven Smith.
Although Rahane didn’t have a great start, he went on to captain Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2018 and 2019. He took RR into the Eliminator in 2018, but he had a poor outing in 2019.
Ahead of the 2025 season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) appointed Rahane as their new captain. In this new stint, he couldn’t do much different, and KKR finished eighth on the points table.
