While the ICC tournaments are top of the tier, the Asia Cup isn’t too far either. India vs Pakistan. Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh. Afghanistan vs Pakistan. These rivalries are too hot to ignore.
This easily makes the Asia Cup one of the most competitive multi-nation cricket tournaments. And it’s the only continental cricket tournament to take place on a larger scale.
So there’s a lot at stake for all the Asian teams competing in the tournament. But only three teams have won the championship so far.
In this piece, we’ll look at the Asia Cup winners from 1984 to 2025.

1984: India
India were the inaugural champions in 1984. The first Asia Cup was a rather short affair, with three teams and three matches.
India topped the points table, defeating Sri Lanka and Pakistan, to become the maiden Asian champions.
1986: Sri Lanka
The second edition also featured three teams, though India didn’t play. Bangladesh, instead, made their tournament debut.
After a round-robin stage, Sri Lanka and Pakistan booked their slot in the summit clash. Pakistan batted first and mustered 191 runs on the board, which Sri Lanka chased down with five wickets to spare.
1988: India
India returned to the tournament in the third edition. And they started their dominant run.
India took on Sri Lanka in the final. They bowled Sri Lanka out for 176 to set up an easy chase and lift their second title.
1990-91: India
India made two in two as they hosted the 1990-91 edition. It was a rematch of the last edition’s final.
After India asked to bat first, Sri Lanka put up 204 runs in a 45-over-a-side final. In response, India’s openers flopped. But the middle-order batter put India back on track to seal their third Asia Cup title.
1995: India
India made a hat-trick of Asia Cup trophies in 1995. It was a closely fought edition with India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan tied on four points each.
But India and Sri Lanka qualified for the final, thanks to their superior run rates. This was the third consecutive final between them. And the result was no different this time either.
India outclassed the island nation to lay their hands on the Asia Cup for the fourth time.
1997: Sri Lanka
India’s successful run came to an end in 1997. Sri Lanka, who couldn’t beat India in their last three attempts, stopped their juggernaut.
Despite Mohammad Azharuddin’s gritty 81, India mustered 239 runs. India’s bowlers couldn’t do much in defence, as Sri Lanka’s top order marched their way to the trophy.
2000: Pakistan
The turn of the century changed Pakistan’s fortunes. After just a single final appearance in the last five editions, they finally lifted the trophy.
Pakistan stormed into the final after three in three wins. They were up against defending champions Sri Lanka in the title clash.
After winning the toss, Pakistan posted 277 for 4 in 50 overs. Despite a hundred from Marvan Atapattu, Sri Lanka faltered in the chase.
2004: Sri Lanka
After a gap of seven years, the Asia Cup returned to Sri Lanka. And the hosts made their seventh consecutive final.
This time, they faced India in the last bout. Sri Lanka put up a below-par 228 runs on the board. But it was enough to restrict India to 203 and lift their third trophy.
2008: Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka and India made it to yet another final, thanks to their dominant run. But it was Sri Lanka who made it a double delight.
Sanath Jayasuriya’s 125-run knock took the Lankan side to 273 runs. Virender Sehwag provided a quick start to India. But other batters couldn’t capitalise on it and went down for 173 runs.
2010: India
The Asia Cup was back in Sri Lanka in 2010. And as usual, the hosts made it to their ninth final in a row.
But India snapped their dominance. After electing to bat first, India put up a fighting 268 on the board.
In defence, India’s pacers were all over the Lankan batters. Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, and Praveen Kumar shared seven wickets between them to bowl Sri Lanka out for 187.
2012: Pakistan
The 2012 edition hosted by Bangladesh was a closely contested affair. Host Bangladesh made their first Asia Cup final. And they fought like tigers against Pakistan.
After being put into bat first, Pakistan mustered 236 for 9 in 50 overs. In response, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan played handy knocks. But they weren’t enough, as Pakistan sneaked in a two-run win to clinch their second title.
2014: Sri Lanka
Pakistan had a golden chance to win their third title in 2014. But a comprehensive performance from Sri Lanka washed off their dream.
Batting first, Pakistan posted 260 runs, riding on the back of Fawad Alam’s unbeaten 114-run knock. In response, Lahiru Thirimanne’s 101 powered Sri Lanka to their fifth trophy.
2016: India
For the first time, the Asia Cup happened in the T20I format. India’s dominant run saw them storm into the final against host Bangladesh.
On a sluggish pitch, India restricted Bangladesh to 120 runs in 20 overs. Shikhar Dhawan’s 60 and quick hands from Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni saw India crush the target in 14 overs.
2018: India
The 2018 edition took place in the ODI format. But the final result was the same.
In a rematch of the last edition’s final, India squared off against Bangladesh. India asked Bangladesh to bat first and bowled them out for 222.
This time, Bangladesh gave a tough fight to take the match to the last ball. But in the end, India prevailed by three wickets to win their seventh title.
2022: Sri Lanka
After a hiatus of three years, the Asia Cup returned to the UAE. This time, it took place in the shortest format.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan set up the fourth Asia Cup final between them. Batting first, Sri Lanka were in a tricky position at 116 for 6. But Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s 71-run charge lifted them to 170.
In response, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed put up a fight. But other batters failed to turn up, as Sri Lanka bowled them out for 147.
2023: India
Despite some controversy before the tournament, the 2023 edition turned out to be good.
India were tournament favourites, alongside co-hosts Sri Lanka. And both teams locked horns in the final in Colombo.
Sri Lanka decided to have a bat after winning the toss. But Mohammad Siraj proved their decision wrong.
His nerve-wracking spell saw Sri Lanka bundled out for just 50. India then closed out the chase in just 6.1 overs to lay their hands on their eighth Asia Cup title.
