Bengaluru’s famous M. Chinnaswamy Stadium could soon undergo a major renovation. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is planning to expand the stadium by adding around 20,000 new seats.
If the project moves forward, the total capacity of the stadium will increase significantly and the venue will also get modern facilities for fans.
The renovation plan is part of KSCA’s long-term vision to upgrade one of India’s most popular cricket stadiums.
Current Capacity and Proposed Expansion
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Current Capacity | Around 34,000 seats |
| Proposed Expansion | Around 20,000 additional seats |
| Expected Capacity After Expansion | About 54,000 seats |
The expansion will allow the stadium to host bigger crowds during major cricket events such as IPL matches and international games.
IPL 2026 Matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium
The venue has already hosted two matches in IPL 2026, both involving Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
IPL 2026 Matches at the Stadium
| Match | Result |
|---|---|
| RCB vs Sunrisers Hyderabad | RCB won |
| RCB vs Chennai Super Kings | RCB won |
Royal Challengers Bengaluru started their home campaign strongly with victories in both matches.
Stadium Closure After 2025 Incident
The stadium had remained closed for almost a year before returning to host matches again.
The closure followed a tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 title celebrations led by Rajat Patidar. Eleven people lost their lives in that incident.
Because of the safety concerns, the venue was temporarily banned from hosting domestic cricket matches.
After safety reviews and improvements, the stadium returned to hosting games.

KSCA’s Renovation Plan
Recently, KSCA officials met with Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to discuss the expansion plan.
The meeting was led by KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad. During the discussion, the association shared its plan to modernize the stadium and increase seating capacity.
Prasad explained that the project will take time because it involves multiple approvals and a bidding process.
He said the stadium was built in the 1970s and now needs modernization to match Bengaluru’s rapid growth as a major city.
According to him, spectators are the most important stakeholders and the goal is to provide a better match-day experience.
Key Areas of the Renovation Project
On April 5, KSCA released an Expression of Interest to begin the redevelopment process.
The proposed renovation will focus on several important areas.
Planned Improvements
| Area | Upgrade Plan |
|---|---|
| Stadium Design | New architectural and structural design |
| Seating | Addition of around 20,000 seats |
| Fan Experience | Modern spectator facilities |
| Crowd Movement | Improved entry and exit flow |
| Parking | Better parking arrangements |
The goal is to create a modern stadium that can host larger crowds safely and comfortably.
Location of the Stadium
M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is located in the central area of Bengaluru.
Stadium Location Details
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Area | Shivaji Nagar |
| Nearby Landmarks | Cubbon Park and MG Road |
| City Zone | Central Business District of Bengaluru |
Because of its central location, the stadium remains one of the most popular cricket venues in India.
Why the Renovation Is Important
The upgrade could help the stadium host more major cricket tournaments in the future.
The ground missed the opportunity to host matches during the T20 World Cup 2026. A larger and more modern stadium could improve its chances of hosting international events in the coming years.
KSCA believes the renovation will strengthen the stadium’s reputation as a top cricket venue.
The renovation project is still in the early planning stage.
The association will invite bids and complete several approval processes before construction can begin.
KSCA president Venkatesh Prasad has said he hopes the transformation of the stadium can happen during his tenure.
If the project goes ahead as planned, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium could become one of the largest and most modern cricket venues in India.
