The IPL 2026 season is set to begin on March 28 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, reports from the city suggest that construction work at the stadium is still ongoing just days before the opening match.
Workers are reportedly rushing to complete final preparations as the venue gets ready to host the defending champions’ first game of the season.
Construction and Safety Upgrades at the Stadium
Last year, a tragic stampede occurred outside the stadium during celebrations after RCB won the trophy. Following that incident, the Karnataka state government temporarily banned the stadium from hosting matches.
Later, the Karnataka State Cricket Association received permission from the government to host games again, including IPL 2026 matches.
As part of the approval process, several safety upgrades were planned at the stadium. These upgrades mainly focused on improving entry and exit routes and expanding fan movement areas to prevent overcrowding.
The deadline to complete the construction work was March 15. However, recent reports and photos show that workers are still finishing parts of the project.
Visitors to the stadium said that plywood sheets were placed at some entrances, covering areas where work was still in progress. Some workers also said they have been working continuously to finish the preparations before the opening match.
Tribute Planned for Fans Who Lost Their Lives
RCB management is planning a special tribute for the eleven fans who died in last year’s stampede.
On match day, players are expected to train wearing jersey number 11 to honor the victims. The team may also reserve eleven seats in the stadium as a memorial for those fans.
This gesture aims to remember the lives lost and show respect during the opening match of the season.
Safety Measures for IPL 2026 Matches
Authorities and stadium officials are placing strong focus on safety during IPL 2026.
RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association and local authorities are working together to ensure that proper crowd management and security arrangements are in place for every home match.
The goal is to provide a safe environment for fans while hosting large crowds during the tournament.

No Opening Ceremony for IPL 2026
The IPL 2026 season will begin without an opening ceremony.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided not to hold a cultural or entertainment program on the opening day as a mark of respect for the victims of last year’s incident.
Instead, a large entertainment event is expected to be held during the IPL 2026 final on May 31 to celebrate the end of the season.
