Pandya first led India in 2022 as the stand-in skipper for the two-match tour of Ireland, which India won 2–0.
After the 2022 T20 World Cup, Pandya served as an interim skipper in Rohit Sharma’s absence. During this phase, he also got the opportunity to captain India in ODIs.
