Michael Bracewell is a late bloomer in international cricket. He is among the few New Zealand players to start his international career after turning 30.
Despite the late start, Bracewell has become an integral part of the New Zealand setup quickly, especially in white-ball cricket. And that has meant he’s also been part of the leadership group.

Bracewell saw his elevation to New Zealand’s T20I captaincy in April 2024, though in a stand-in capacity. He filled in for regular skipper Kane Williamson on their tour of Pakistan.
While the result started with a no result, Bracewell guided New Zealand to a 2-1 lead before settling on a 2-2 draw.
In March 2025, Bracewell stepped up again in Mitchell Santner’s absence to lead the Blackcaps to a 4-1 T20I series win against Pakistan at home. Then a 3-0 series sweep followed in ODIs against the same opposition.
With that, Bracewell has proven his leadership skills in white-ball cricket across different conditions.

Bracewell maintains a 100 per cent record in his stand-in capacity. He stepped up in a three-match series against Pakistan in 2025, winning all three ODIs. Interestingly, all wins came while defending the targets.

Bracewell’s T20I record is also impressive. He has guided the Kiwis to a 2-2 series draw (2024) and a 4-1 series victory (2025) against Pakistan.
New Zealand even recorded their largest run margin T20I win under Bracewell’s captaincy. They defeated Pakistan by 115 runs in the fourth T20I in March 2025.
