Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) were in the middle of a disastrous season when they handed the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer. Nobody knew what to expect from an inexperienced Iyer.
But Delhi made the playoffs in the next two seasons. DC even reached the final in 2020, though they went down against Mumbai Indians.
Iyer shifted his base to Kolkata in 2022. And two years later, he overcame the final hurdle, taking the Knight Riders to the title triumph in IPL 2024.
Despite Iyer’s success, Kolkata let go of him, and he moved to Punjab Kings. Iyer carried his magic to Punjab and propelled them to their first final since 2014 in IPL 2025.
While he couldn’t end Punjab’s trophy drought, it showed his adaptiveness as a captain to work with different setups.
In all, the right-hand batter has captained in 87 IPL matches and returned with 50 wins.
Outside the IPL, Iyer has led Mumbai in the domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). He took Mumbai to the title in the 2024/25 season. With 11 wins in 13 matches, his record remains one of the best in the tournament.
