Annabel Sutherland has a strong cricketing background. Her father, James, played for Victoria in Australia’s domestic circuit, while her brother, Will, is an active cricketer.
Like her father and brother, Annabel is an excellent all-rounder. She has proved her all-round worth on many occasions.
Annabel has perhaps learnt a thing or two about leadership from her father, who served as Cricket Australia’s CEO. She has been implementing those leadership lessons on the field, hoping to captain Australia in the future. She has been at the helm of Melbourne Stars in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
So, how has Annabel fared as a captain?
Here you can look at Annabel Sutherland’s captaincy record in the WBBL.

Sutherland’s WBBL captaincy debut in 2023. She stepped up to lead Melbourne Stars, who had an average outing that season.
With three matches left in the season, Sutherland filled in for Meg Lanning and ended the Stars’ campaign on a high with three wins.

Sutherland’s promising start meant she replaced Lanning as the Stars’ permanent skipper in 2024. She, however, failed to build on the start, as the Stars finished at the bottom in 2024 with just two wins in 10 matches.
The Stars, though, have backed Sutherland to end their WBBL trophy drought. And she seems to be on her way to repay the faith shown by the club. She is already the Stars’ second-most successful captain in the WBBL.
